55th MERDEKA DAY :: Malaysian we ROCK the world record !

A world record of one million tweets expressing patriotic feelings is targeted from Twitter users in Malaysia in conjunction with the "Perhimpunan Janji Ditepati" (Promises Fulfilled Gathering) in celebrating the country's 55th Merdeka Day, this Friday.

Information, Communications and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said Twitter users in Malaysia could post their tweets within one hour between 8.15pm and 9.15pm via Tweet #Merdeka55 while the celebration would be going on that night at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil."On that (Friday) night, we will imbibe the Merdeka spirit together by making up to one million tweets. We appeal to all Twitter users to do this as a symbol of love for Malaysia," he said after watching the Merdeka Day parade rehearsal today.Rais said to achieve the government's target of Merdeka tweets, his ministry had appealed to all telecommunication companies in the country to be prepared in order to avoid any transmission disruption during that time to enable Twitter users to make their tweets.

He said free LRT service to Bukit Jalil from as early as 8am until the end of the celebration would also be provided, in line with the government's aim of gathering as many people from all walks of life at the stadium for the celebration."I urge people from the Klang Valley and other parts of the country to join this Merdeka celebration," he said.Meanwhile, Rais also hit out at the opposition for "only being good at politicising the Merdeka celebration this time" and he described their action as extreme."Instead, they should together celebrate this auspicious occasion and assist a little in organising the celebration. What can we do? To them, their job is to oppose, no matter what."But they should remember that since the country achieved its independence (in 1957), they (opposition) too have been enjoying the fruit of the ruling government's efforts," he said.Rais also refuted the claims by opposition portals that Merdeka Day this time would only be celebrated by those who were pro-government while some people were not invited to the gathering on Friday night."This is not true as we invite all, regardless of their political affiliation or belief, to join this celebration," he said.

The Merdeka Day parade rehearsal today saw the participation of more than 13,000 people from various government agencies, corporate bodies, security forces and non-governmental organisations. On preparations for the 55th Merdeka Day parade to be held at Dataran Merdeka on Friday morning, Rais said they were at a good level but there was still room for improvement and this could be done at the final rehearsal tomorrow.

One of the parade participants, undergraduate Faezah Harun, 23, who will be involved in the 1Malaysia For Youth (IM4U) special performance, she said they would give their best in demonstrating the younger generation's support for the Independence Day celebration this time. The event is divided into five segments, with the Rukun Negara segment coordinated by the Education Ministry and the Future Leaders segment by the Youth and Sports Ministry.

The "Janji Ditepati" segment is coodinated by the Prime Minister's Department and "Gegar Merdeka" by the Malaysian Armed Forces involving participants from the military, volunteers and veterans, besides featuring an air show and marching by the contingents. The last segment called 'Proud to be Malaysians' is coordinated by the National Arts and Heritage Department, with a reading of the pledge by 55 selected individuals.

Food crisis : Over 200 Million People Are Hungry in India

There's no sugar coating this: India has more people suffering from hunger than any other country in the world. More than 200 million don't get enough to eat, and according to the 2008 Global Hunger Index just released, not one of India's 17 states rank in the low- or moderate-hunger categories — and 12 states have rank "alarming." India is 66th out of 88 countries surveyed (a stat in itself that makes you think of those 22 other countries that are worse.)

Kids bear a lot of the brunt of the hunger crisis  numbers released two years ago showed that even then, more than half of the children in India were malnourished. The rise in global food prices not mirrored in rising incomes has made the problem worse. As grim as this news sounds, there are people doing work to help. To find out which former presidential candidates just won an award for their work on hunger, read more.

Former candidates Bob Dole and George McGovern have just been awarded the World Food Prize for their work to alleviate global hunger. The Republican/Democrat duo created the George McGovern-Robert Dole International Food For Education and Nutrition Program. The prize president says, "There's a significant message that's included by having them both honored, one Democrat, one Republican."

Despite efforts, more work is needed. The World Health Organization just warned that the life expectancy between rich and poor countries varies by as much as 40 years. Let's hope increased bipartisan efforts will do the world some more good.

Stop Killing The Islam!

Two people were killed and over 50, including 41 policemen, injured as a protest by several Muslim organisations to condemn the alleged attacks on Muslims in Myanmar and the Assam riots turned violent, officials said. An alert has been sounded in the city.
“Two people are reported dead in St George Hospital (in south Mumbai) and the over 50 injured are being treated in hospitals here,” an official from the disaster management cell told IANS.
Of the 52 injured, 41 are policemen, the official added.

Those killed have been identified as Mohamed Umar, 22, and Altaf Shaikh, 18. A photographer from Sakal Times, Prashant Sawant, 50, was also seriously injured in the violence along with at least three other photo journalists.
Terming the situation “delicate”, the city police chief said that a red alert has been issued.
“The holy month of Ramadan is on. Considering there were serial blasts in Pune recently, and that the Independence Day is also coming up, we have issued a red alert in the city until the situation is entirely under control,” Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik told media persons here.
Over 25,000 members and activists of several Muslim organisations staged a protest yesterday at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai to protest alleged attacks on Muslims in Myanmar and the Assam riots.
Led by Raza Academy, an organisation working to promote Islamic culture, the protest to condemn the alleged attacks on Muslims in Myanmar was supported by other organisations like Sunni Jamaitul Ulma and Jamate Raza-e-Mustafa.

They also condemned the riots and violence in Assam.
“The situation got out of control as a group of protesters turned aggressive at around 3.15pm. I personally spoke to a few of them who were on the dais and requested them to maintain calm,” Patnaik added.
However, the group had already started pelting stones on city buses and started setting media and police vans on fire. Patnaik said that around 10 buses and six vans were damaged.
Policemen had made a baton charge to disperse the mob. They also fired in air and immediately cordoned off the area.
Asked whether the lack of proper security led to the incident, Patnaik said that the security at Azad Maidan was proper.
“There were enough policemen at the ground and there was no lapse in security system. However, an angry mob has to be handled with tact and use of force often worsens the situation and hence the policemen did not use force,” he said.

The violence, however, affected the local train services on the harbour and central lines. Traffic jams were also seen on roads leading to southern and south central parts of the city.
Opposition parties hit out at the government for the violence.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said yesterday that the attack was an apt example of how the state government has no hold over the deteriorating law and order situation in the city.
“We condemn the attack on media persons and on duty policemen. However, police should have anticipated violence during an event that had a huge gathering,” a BJP spokesperson said.
Republican Party of India (RPI) chief Ramdas Athawale also condemned the attack.

The Mumbai Press Club alleged that the violence broke out after a Muslim cleric verbally attacked the media for not covering the atrocities in Myanmar and Assam.
“According to eyewitnesses, a maulana in his speech verbally attacked the media, claiming that the atrocities in Assam and Burma were deliberately not being covered by the press. This incensed the crowd which turned against photographers and TV crews on and around the Maidan,” the Press Club said in a statement.
It also demanded that the government immediately order an enquiry to determine how the violence erupted and punish those responsible for it.

Wayne Rooney injured, makes him miss the league for a months

England manager Roy Hodgson will name a squad without Wayne Rooney on Thursday after the Manchester United star was taken to hospital with a horrifically-gashed thigh suffered against Fulham on Saturday.
He looks certain to be ruled out for four weeks, missing two World Cup qualifiers next month.
Rooney, who had been left out of the starting line-up by Sir Alex Ferguson, was in agony after Fulham’s Hugo Rodallega accidentally stamped on his right thigh during a collision in injury-time of United’s 3-2 win at Old Trafford.
